Get your colon cancer screening done!
Sometimes taking care of our health is a real pain in the rear.
In the case of colo-rectal cancer, we mean that literally. The good news is, when the cancer is detected early, the five-year survival rate is 90 percent. And for those most at risk, those over age 50, screenings are available without cost sharing, i.e. free! We want to make sure our patients are getting screened early.
Fortunately, there is a simple, non-invasive test you can take—no poking or prodding required. The “FIT” (Fecal Immunochemical Test) has is as successful as colonoscopies in detecting colon abnormalities. The kit makes it easy to collect a small stool sample onto a card, seal it in the kit envelope, and send it directly to a lab where it is tested for hidden blood. If any blood is detected you may then be referred for a colonoscopy.
If you choose the FIT over colonoscopy you’ll be encouraged to have the test done annually. But that’s a small price to pay in exchange for the simplicity of the test. Colo-rectal cancer often has no symptoms, yet it’s the second leading cause of cancer deaths. So if you are over 50, get your rear in gear and check with your provider to see if you are due for a screening!
