Understanding HIV & STIs

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, are common and often show no symptoms, which is why regular testing is so important. Anyone who is sexually active can be affected, regardless of age or background.

HIV is one type of STI that can weaken the immune system over time if left untreated. Other infections—such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HPV—can also lead to serious health complications when not diagnosed early and treated.

The good news is that many STIs are treatable, and some are preventable, especially with routine testing and early care. At the Adelante VIDA Clinic, we provide confidential testing, treatment, STI prevention, medications, and education to help you stay informed and protect your health.

Take the first step toward protecting your health. Schedule confidential HIV and STI testing at the Adelante VIDA Clinic today.

Who Should Get Tested?

HIV in Our Community

Most new HIV diagnoses in Arizona occur in Maricopa County, accounting for about two-thirds of cases statewide. In Arizona, the highest diagnosis rates are among young adults, particularly those in their 20s and early 30s.

HIV often has no symptoms in its early stages, which is why testing is so important. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 13% of people living with HIV in the United States—more than 150,000 people—do not know they have it. Routine testing helps people learn their status and connect to care early.

For people who may be at risk, PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a highly effective medication that can help prevent HIV.

HIV Testing Recommendations

Everyone ages 13–64 should be tested for HIV at least once. Annual testing is recommended for people with higher risk factors, including:

  • Men who have sex with men (MSM)
  • People with multiple sexual partners
  • Individuals who share injection drug equipment
  • People diagnosed with another STI, hepatitis, or tuberculosis
  • Individuals who exchange sex for money or drugs
  • Pregnant individuals should also be tested during each pregnancy.

STI Testing Recommendations

Regular STI screening is an important part of maintaining sexual health.

  • Sexually active women under 25: yearly testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea (such as new or multiple partners)
  • Women 25 and older: testing if risk factors are present (such as new or multiple partners)
  • Pregnant women: early pregnancy screening for HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C, and chlamydia/gonorrhea if at risk
  • Sexually active MSM: at least annual testing for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea (every 3–6 months may be recommended)
  • People living with HIV: STI screening at least annually
  • Anyone who has had oral or anal sex: talk with your provider about throat or rectal testing options
