Fall is an exciting time for kids, filled with costumes, candy, and plenty of energy. As fall festivities approach, it’s important to consider how to keep their excitement balanced with nutrition. In this post, we’ll share tips on how to offer healthier alternatives, manage candy consumption, and maintain balance after the holiday fun is over.
Pre-Trick or Treat Fuel
Before your little ones head out for their Halloween adventures, make sure they enjoy a hearty, protein-rich meal. Serve dishes like grilled chicken with quinoa, lentil and vegetable soup, or a hearty bean and cheese burrito. A full tummy means they’re less likely to overindulge in candy later.
Swap Candy for Fun Prizes or Healthy Snacks

Halloween Candy and Dental Health
During Halloween time, give your kids the freedom to select their favorite candies. To keep their dental health in check, remind them to brush their teeth regularly.
What if my child keeps asking for candy?
It’s not uncommon for your kids to consistently ask for candy right after Halloween. Don’t fear! There are a couple of ways you can keep a healthy boundary with sweet treats so your little one can enjoy their Halloween treasures. Here are some tips to help:
-
- Save it for an upcoming holiday activity like building a Gingerbread house or making ornaments.
-
- Offer 1 piece of candy for lunch or dinner 2-3x per week to help take out the novelty.
-
- Use for a pinata or candy dish during the holidays.
-
- Offer leftover candy as sweet gifts to friends and/or family for potlucks, classroom activities, or for holiday stockings stuffers.
Maintaining Balance After Halloween
After Halloween, store the candy and follow your usual sugar and dessert rules. Offer sweets with meals or snacks, such as in a lunch box, to show they fit into a balanced diet. As a parent, you can control when candy is given rather than giving in to every request. Let your child know that candy isn’t disappearing after October 31st and can be enjoyed in moderation to keep the Halloween spirit alive.
