September 9-15th is National Suicide Prevention Week and, with it, comes a warning about the particular risk of youth suicide.
For most, the years of transitioning into adulthood can be a critical period for social and cognitive growth. However, the stigma remains when talking about mental health and navigating these changes in a healthy way, forcing many to turn away from resources that could actually help them.
Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death for those between the ages of 15-24?
For every death, there can be as many as 200 attempts. And some groups, such as LGBTQ youth, face an even greater risk.
Know the signs!
Recognize if someone you know is exhibiting certain suicidal behaviors such as:
- Suicidal ideation (such as threatening to kill themselves or statements such as “I wish I wasn’t here”)
- Increased alcohol and drug use
- Aggressive behavior/Dramatic mood swings
- Becoming socially withdrawn from family and friends
Together, we can end the stigma surrounding mental health and help save lives. For more information about suicide and what you can do, visit the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
