Remembering Dr. Ajaz Rahaman

Dr.Rahaman

On Tuesday August 9th, Adelante Healthcare in conjunction with Del Webb Hospital joined together in the Del Webb auditorium to celebrate the great life of Dr. Rahaman. The service was beyond wonderful as we had several speakers, including our very own CEO, Avein Saaty-Tafoya; Joe C. Harrington, CEO of Del E. Webb Medical Center, and Dr. Rafael Mendoza.

Dr. Rahaman’s close family; his sister Shamena, his brother in-law, and two cousins, were able to fly in and join us in honoring the life of Dr. Rahaman. We shed some tears and laughed a great deal, as we viewed slides of Dr. Rahaman’s life and listened to stories of his beautiful personality and great sense of humor.

Dr. Rahaman will always live in our hearts and it is now up to us, to continue living his legacy of providing great customer service to our patients.

Adelante Healthcare selects EVIT campus to build health center

Adelante Healthcare selects EVIT campus to build health center

Healthcare facility to bring jobs, training opportunities for students

On Sept. 20, the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) and Adelante Healthcare signed a 40-year land lease agreement to build a new, state-of-the-art, public health center on the west Mesa campus at 1601 W. Main Street.

The 45,000-square-foot health center will take roughly eight months to construct and is anticipated to open in fall-2012. It will be located on the northwest corner of the EVIT campus, adjacent to the METRO light rail stop and near the transit center at Sycamore and Main Street.

“After an exhaustive search encompassing three municipalities and more than a year, this location represents a great opportunity for Adelante Healthcare to expand into a medically underserved area with a highly-visible, purpose-built development, with a forward thinking educational partner” said Aaron Kuhl of Medical Office Brokers.

Adelante Healthcare currently operates eight health centers throughout Maricopa County and offers a wide array of services and programs to patients from all social and economic backgrounds. Services include family and internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, health screenings, immunizations, nutrition education and support for patients with chronic diseases, such as asthma and diabetes.

“The expansion of Adelante Healthcare to the EVIT campus is a great partnership that benefits both institutions and our community,” Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said. “It is also a big win for Mesa that fits right into our H.E.A.T. initiative. Healthcare and Education are two of our four pillars of economic development.”

Health and nursing programs account for roughly one-third, or approximately 1,000 students, on the EVIT campus each year.  The Adelante Healthcare facility will provide hands-on, real-life experience for students along with the opportunity to complete clinical hours required for certification in programs such as medical assisting and practical nursing.

“Connecting our health and nursing students at EVIT with a working healthcare center on campus is a fantastic way to provide students with the training they need to succeed,” District 3 Councilmember Dennis Kavanaugh said. “I am excited to see our residents get another healthcare option in west Mesa and look forward to the jobs the new facility will provide.

Adelante Healthcare Celebrates 2011 Hon Kachina awardee Adalberto Jimenez!

Moving care for migrant workers forward

2011 Hon Kachina awardee Adalberto Jimenez grew up in the fields of Arizona and became a driving force behind improving the conditions of those around him.

PHOENIX – Adalberto Jimenez’ understanding of the plight of the migrant worker grew as organically as he did after being born in a Buckeye, Arizona. farm labor camp in 1935.

After more than 40 years of putting this empathy and knowledge to good use as the leading force behind Adelante Healthcare, Jimenez will join five other prominent Arizona volunteers as recipients of the 2011 Hon Kachina Volunteer Award. These six Arizonans who exemplify the very best of volunteerism will be honored at the annual Hon Kachina Awards dinner on Oct. 1, 2011 at the J.W. Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa.

While his formal education may have ended in the 8th grade, Jimenez continued to learn the value of hard work and an undying sense of community as he toiled in the lettuce fields as a young man. Once old enough, he joined the Marines and was awarded the Navy Marine Cross for heroism (the highest award at that time) in 1954 for saving the life of his sergeant.

Returning from the service as a trained machinist, Jimenez was forced to return to the fields when denied work in his learned trade due to his Mexican heritage. He quickly noticed that the horses on the farm where he labored, lived in better conditions than his coworkers. This spurred him to begin his volunteer career as an activist working to secure basic needs of migrant workers.

Jimenez helped establish Adelante Healthcare (formerly Clinica Adelante) as the first health center for migrant workers in Arizona in the early 1970s, eventually donating thousands of hours to this organization, including a stint as the president of its board. In its first year of existence, the healthcare center provided 900 people with health care. In 2010, now called Adelante Healthcare, more than 26,000 people received affordable health care – an accomplishment that would not have been possible without Jimenez’ efforts.

He also contributed to several other organizations that help the farm workers and others who often perform the unseen and unwanted work that others simply won’t do. It is his dedication to the people with whom he shares his heritage and his heart that has earned Jimenez’ distinction as a top Arizona volunteer. But, in his mind, his efforts were very simple.

“In my life, I tried to give a voice to people who didn’t have a voice,” Jimenez said.

About Hon Kachina

Since 1977, more than 375 nominees have been honored for their dedication to causes that include health care, neighborhood revitalization, youth and senior activities, the arts, education, justice, housing, nutrition or social services. Many have given what they can at great personal sacrifice.

The Hon Kachina Council, affiliated with St. Luke’s Health Initiatives, is a group of servant leaders from the Valley business and professional community who promotes volunteerism by recognizing ordinary individuals doing extraordinary things, applauding them and presenting them as an example to motivate others to volunteer.
